At River Valley Smile Center, we understand that dental emergencies can be sudden and stressful. Knowing how to respond when faced with an urgent dental issue can significantly impact both pain management and treatment outcomes. Here’s a guide on what to do if you find yourself or a loved one in a dental emergency.
Toothache
Severe tooth pain can indicate an infection or decay. Rinse your mouth with warm water and floss to remove any debris. Avoid placing aspirin or other painkillers directly on the gum, as it can irritate the tissue. Use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling and call us immediately for further assistance.
Chipped or Broken Tooth
If you experience a chipped or broken tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area, and apply a cold compress to minimize swelling. If possible, save any broken pieces of the tooth and bring them with you to your appointment. Avoid chewing on that side of the mouth until we can see you.
Knocked-Out Tooth
A knocked-out tooth requires urgent care. Try to keep it moist by placing it back in the socket, holding it between your cheek and gums, or storing it in a container of milk. Contact us right away—acting quickly increases the chance of saving the tooth.
Lost Crown or Filling
If a crown or filling falls out, keep the area clean and avoid chewing on it. If you can, keep the crown in a safe place and contact us to schedule a repair as soon as possible.
