Handling Dental Emergencies: What to Do When Accidents Happen

Dental emergencies can strike unexpectedly, leaving you in pain and uncertainty. Whether it’s a chipped tooth, a knocked-out tooth, or severe toothache, knowing how to handle these situations effectively can make a significant difference in your oral health. At River Valley Smile Center, we’re here to guide you through the crucial steps to take during a dental emergency.

1. Chipped or Broken Tooth

If you’ve chipped or broken a tooth, it’s essential to keep the damaged piece if possible. Rinse it gently with water, and store it in a container with milk or saliva to keep it moist. Contact your dentist immediately for an emergency appointment. In the meantime, avoid chewing on the affected side and use over-the-counter pain relievers if needed.

2. Knocked-Out Tooth

A knocked-out tooth requires prompt action. Gently rinse the tooth with water, avoiding scrubbing or removing any tissue attached. Try to reinsert it into the socket carefully. If that’s not possible, place the tooth in a container of milk or saliva and seek emergency dental care as soon as possible. The sooner you receive treatment, the better the chances of saving the tooth.

3. Severe Toothache

A severe toothache can be debilitating. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to alleviate discomfort and reduce swelling. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to help with pain and inflammation. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the affected area as it can cause damage. Contact your dentist promptly to identify and treat the underlying issue.

4. Soft Tissue Injuries

If you injure your gums, tongue, or cheeks, rinse with warm salt water and apply gentle pressure to control bleeding. For swelling, use a cold compress. Seek dental care to ensure proper healing and to address any potential complications.
