Root Canal Surgery: What It Is and When You Might Need One

Root Canal Surgery: What You Need to Know

Hearing the words “root canal” might make some people nervous—but thanks to modern dental technology, root canal surgery is now a safe, effective, and relatively painless procedure. Not only can it relieve serious tooth pain, but it can also save your natural tooth and prevent the need for extraction.

What Is Root Canal Surgery?
Also known as endodontic treatment, root canal surgery is necessary when the soft tissue inside your tooth—called the pulp—becomes inflamed or infected. This can happen due to deep decay, repeated dental work, a crack or chip in the tooth, or trauma. If not treated, the infection can spread and cause serious complications.

How Does the Procedure Work?
During the procedure, your dentist or endodontist will remove the infected pulp, carefully clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth, and then fill and seal it. In many cases, a crown is added to the tooth afterward to restore its strength and appearance. The entire process is typically done under local anesthesia and feels similar to getting a filling.

Signs You May Need a Root Canal:

  • Persistent tooth pain
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Swollen or tender gums
  • Darkening or discoloration of the tooth
  • Pimple-like bumps on the gums

Don’t Wait to Seek Treatment
Delaying treatment can result in worsening pain, the spread of infection, and even tooth loss. The good news? Root canals have a high success rate and can help preserve your natural smile for years to come.
