Losing Baby Teeth: What Parents Should Know

One of the most exciting milestones in childhood is losing baby teeth! At River Valley Smile Center, we’re here to guide parents through this natural process and help ensure their child’s smile stays healthy from those first baby teeth to a full set of permanent ones.

When Do Kids Start Losing Baby Teeth?
Most children begin to lose their teeth between the ages of 5 and 7, typically starting with the lower front teeth. The process continues gradually, with the last baby molars usually falling out around age 12 or 13. This important transition makes room for the permanent, adult teeth to grow in and shape your child’s lifelong smile.

What to Expect
Baby teeth usually loosen on their own as permanent teeth push up from underneath. You can encourage your child to gently wiggle a loose tooth, but never force it out before it’s ready. When the tooth finally falls out, it’s normal to see a small amount of bleeding and for your child to feel mild discomfort.

Tips for Parents

  • Keep up with daily brushing and flossing, even during the tooth-loss stage.
  • Use a soft cloth or gauze to stop bleeding after a tooth falls out.
  • Schedule regular dental visits so we can monitor your child’s dental development.
  • Celebrate each lost tooth—it’s a special part of growing up!

When to See the Dentist
While losing baby teeth is a natural process, there are times when a dental check is needed. If your child hasn’t lost any baby teeth by age 7, or if permanent teeth begin growing in before the baby teeth have fallen out (commonly called “shark teeth”), it’s a good idea to schedule an appointment.

Whether your child is losing their first tooth or their last baby molar, we’re here to ensure every stage is healthy and worry-free.
