Caring for porcelain veneers properly is what is going to help them last. When you get veneers put on by a River Valley Smile Center dentist, we make sure to tell you how to care for them so they can last as long as possible. With proper care, you may not need to replace your veneers for 10 or more years. Here are a few important things to know when it comes to keeping your veneers looking and functioning perfect.
How to Properly Care for Porcelain Veneers
Since the veneers are just thin sheets of porcelain adhered to the front of your teeth, you need to be gentle with them. Think about glass. The thicker the glass, the more impact it can take, but when glass is very thin, it is brittle. The same goes with veneers, so make sure you are not using them for any hard labor. No biting on pens, chewing on ice, or trying to open difficult containers with your teeth, or you may break your veneers.
Your veneers, while connected, should still be brushed and flossed as you would the rest of your teeth. You need to brush two times each day, and floss at least once, to keep all your teeth, including those with veneers, healthy and strong. Having veneers on does not stop or hinder your ability to properly maintain your teeth.
Clenching or grinding your teeth should be dealt with prior to getting veneers, but if you started it or noticed it after getting the veneers, you need to come in. We need to help you get a bite guard to put into your mouth when you normally clench or grind your teeth. This will keep you from doing anything to harm the delicate veneer surface.
Limiting any foods or drinks that stain your teeth will help your veneers look their best for as long as possible. Just like if you were to put a piece of china into a bowl of coffee or beet juice, you would wind up with stained china, your veneers will pick up on these stains, too.
